Blue Scholars

A Podcast that I subscribe to, IndieFeed Hip-Hop, featured a song by Blue Scholars back in the beginning of June. The song was entitled "Fire for the People". After listening to the track... I quickly went to find out if they had an album out. The one that I was able to get my hands on was their latest release, Bayani which happened to be released the same day the track was featured on IndieFeed Hip-Hop. The production is tight and the lyrics are even tighter; they're conscious and down-to-earth. If you are looking to break away from the cliche ridden mainstream hip-hop that is all starting to sound the same you need to check this album out.

Head over to TapeDeck.org for some true Hip-Hop mix-tape nostalgia. Most of the tapes I used in the past were Maxell and TDK. You can still order actual mix-tapes from Fatbeats.com under cassettes. I guess some DJs out there are going extraordinary lengths to stay true to the mix-tape game.

Listening to the IndieFeedHipHop Podcast today and they featured a band called The Smile Rays. I must say that I was quite impressed. I've only been able to listen to the tracks they have on their MySpace page as well as the track on the podcast. You can get their album at their shows, unfortunately I'm in the UK for another year and won't make it to any of their shows unless they come out here.

The Definitive Jux label has been putting a out a lot of heavy hitting releases. Check out what they have to offer. I must admit I'm not impressed with the way that they are charging for their iPod Videos.

One of the most underrated players in the Hip-Hop game right now is a Detroit MC by the name of Guilty Simpson. He has had numerous guest appearances on several albums (Jay Dilla, Chrome Children). He has been busy on tour supporting the Chrome Children album. I hope that he has an album all to his own out soon.

Another Hip-Hop Milestone Yesterday

Associated Press (AP) just recently wrote another article (CNN) attributed to Hip-Hop. The AP still doesn't get that there is a different between Hip-Hop and rap. Granted there might not be Hip-Hop without rap. Rap is one key traits but rap in itself is not Hip-Hop. If you are reading this, you already know.

March 12, 2007 - Mark it on your calendar as a significant date in Hip-Hop history. You will read about it in books to come. Hip-Hop artists were inducted in the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now, I am not-so-sure at this point on what to think of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I never have given it much though. I figured it had a bunch of artists that my parents listened to and it was merely for people senior than myself. Reading through the article in Wikipedia, I see that there has been some 'criticism' and I can see why. In fact, I will expect some 'criticism' from the Hip-Hop community about what happened yesterday. The process of selection isn't perfect (show me one that it), but people do get recognized and Hip-Hop finally did. Only one at this time: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five(for the 2007 list click here)... but we should see more in the years to come.

Grandmaster Flash is quoted as saying that KRS-One should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It would be interesting to see what KRS-One has to say about that. I would imagine that he wouldn't like being put into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame much like the Sex Pistols did. I've read KRS-One's comments about the Sept. 11th attacks. It appears that he is anti-corporate America/establishment and he might think that this falls under the same umbrella.

The same article was also posted on Business Week. The AP, Business Week, CNN... how Hip-Hop is that?

Now it is time to get that Hip-Hop Hall of Fame together. Donations? For now there is the Philly Hip-Hop Hall of Fame, Chuck-D's Documentary and probably some others.

XXL's 10 Reasons

So XXL "hip-hop" magazine has an article in their March 2007 issue entitled "10 Reasons Why Hip-Hop Ain't Dead". There are a few legitimate 'artists' listed. We're looking forward to Raekwon's new album, Lil Jon's "Crunk Rock" and even T.I.'s "T.I. vs T.I.P." Lil' Wayne is at the top of their list with, surprise, surprise "Tha' Carter 3". Those of you who have "Tha Carter I & II" probably can't wait to get your hands on this release. He does have some power house producers listed, but anything with Lil' Wayne weazin' on tha mic is like nails on a chalk board no matter how good the beats are. There are always the instrumentals and other acapellas to rescue the tracks.

As of today, here are 10 "True Hip-Hop" reasons why hip-hop ain't dead (check 'em if you haven't already):

Hip-Hop Dead?

MY THOUGHTS:

From the article:

"I'm not removed from it, but I can't really tell the difference between Young Jeezy and Yung Joc. It's the same dumb stuff to me," says Duncan-Smith, 33. "I can't listen to that nonsense ... I can't listen to another black man talk about you don't come to the 'hood anymore and ghetto revivals ... I'm from the 'hood. How can you tell me you want to revive it? How about you want to change it? Rejuvenate it?"

So… true. I would say RAP is dead, hip-hop isn’t dead. I think it has lost its focus over the last few years. I have grown extremely tired of the ‘hood’ shit. What about Little Brother? What about Strange Fruit Project? Jurassic 5? Busdriver? I don’t think stuff like that has been given enough credit. I have been waiting for people to get tired of the mainstream hood shit. And it is about time. I would like to hear what Rick Rubin has to say about it. Or KRS-One? Rick Rubin has recently produced “Better than I’ve Ever Been”. But he hasn’t produced a whole hip-hop album since the 80s (list of Rick Rubin productions). The latest editions of The Source and XXL magazines have called 2006 the worst year in hip-hop.

Recent quote from T.I., “”If you consider hip-hop five people on a street corner with no money, then, possibly hip-hop could be dead. But if you consider hip-hop waking up in your $5 million house and lounging in your $250,000 car and conducting business, then hip-hop is very much still alive.” (XXL, No. 89, March ’07)

We are all tired of those music videos and lyrics about the cars, women, money, jewelry, etc. The richest man in the world doesn’t even roll like that, so why would I embrace subject matter thrown at me like that coming from uneducated, ignorant, wannabees? Pure entertainment? It was entertaining eight+ years ago. Even the TV series friends had its years numbered. A good number of the wannabees have been ‘pimped’ by the industry and an even bigger number wishes that they were.

XXL magazine has on the front cover of their magazines: “Hip-hop on a higher level”. This cannot be further from the truth. XXL has continued to ruin hip-hop ever since it was first published. For proof, just pick-up a copy (don’t buy it) and thumb through the last 10 pages and you will see ads for porn and other degrading products. Definitely not hip-hop.
